Take USB Mini-B, what happened to that? What happened to USB Mini-A, Why did we move on from USB Micro-B? Why did USB C supersede USB Micro-B? So many USB questions, so little time.

  • I keep hearing that USB-C is a total disaster for user friendliness because itโ€™s impossible to know what hardware actually lies behind each connector. Where is my Power Delivery? Alternate mode? If itโ€™s a TB3 port then how do I know Iโ€™m getting the best possible image quality? Also youโ€™re relying on people just understanding that you canโ€™t drag a cable from your phone to your printer and use it as if itโ€™s a PC. And the standard is still master-slave which people no longer intuitively understand because the connector is the same on both ends. And then I havenโ€™t even gotten into the ABSURD naming confusion of USB 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2: nlworld.info/key/video/yIuZhKfWmJ-rjp4

So if you're one of those crazy people who attempt assign meaning to random things: this could reflect poorly for the stability of the USB "standard." ;-) :-p

  • They're called HOST and PERIPHERAL by the hardware folks and the software uses terms like HOST, PERIPHERAL and END POINT. The term SLAVE is used when the peripheral does not have enough processing power to do its job and relies on the HOST for that. USB ports had to change for both miniaturization and to make the connections inside the plugs/sockets closer to the size of the cable. Reason for that is part of reducing signal propagation interference when you get to 450MHz to 12GHz speeds.

  • The reason is simple, we can't engineer a perfect cable that will work, ad infinitum, given unknown future speeds, formats, and specifications. We live locked in time, and can only design that which is optimized for today's needs.

  • USB C : The gold standard and what all slim devices should use for charging going forward (barring wireless charging), I know I love it on my laptop and smartphone. My laptop actually has 2 USB C ports, one on either side, truly it is as wonderful as it sounds. Micro USB: Trash that only the Chinese companies that apparently made my low end wireless headphones insist on continuing to use into the 2020's I petition an international ban on the creation of any new devices that charge via micro USB (joke, but really guys how much more can it cost to just use USB C for everything?)

I had a device which, by cutting a hole in the case, turned my 720k floppies to 1.44Mb disks. As with HDD and CD size ands speed, we were all conned.

  • short answer 95% of companys are ass holes. who do intentional obsolescence of their products. changing plugins, format, 3G phones to 5G, 8bit to 16bit. its all forced control of you and your wallet. like hitting a cow with a cattle prod. oh you want to keep the cell phone you have had for the last 10 years, to bad it doesn't work on our new towers. the only market that doesn't do this "forced compliance" tactic is the guitar industry. a guitar amp or pedal made 40-70 years ago works just as good today. and people are still making a living fixing them. to quote Sarge from RVB. "the only smart investment is to invest in technology that hasn't been invented yet. and hopefully never will be."
